Adjustable Cat "Safety" Collar - Breakaway: Re-designed My Foot! (+ my review, story, and fix)Nov 05, 2008
My review:
This collar has worked like a charm, now that I've MacGyver'd it into being safe and effective. I have even ordered another one to replace the one I accidentally ruined while trying to fix it.
My story:
This collar is supposed to have been redesigned, and that's what scares me. I read the reviews about this thing being dangerous, but I really liked the design and thought that maybe it was just the "old" models that wouldn't breakaway. I bought two, one for my huge 15 pound Maine Coon mix, and one for my new 5 month old kitten. When they arrived I immediately yanked one see if they really were dangerous. I'm sad to say that it took me two tries (I didn't pull hard enough the first time) but I eventually pulled it apart. Now, I'm no small, delicate, flower of a woman (being around 6 feet tall), but I decided to give one to my boyfriend to try. He yanked and yanked, and finally got the collar to open. I thought maybe the one we had tried was defective, so I pulled out the other, but it was exactly the same. I seriously doubt that my large cat could pull free, and I am absolutely positive that there is no way my kitten could.
My fix:
Normal collars wear away the fur around my large cat's throat, so I decided to try to salvage these small, lightweight collars. I pulled out a nail file and filed around the "plug" part of the clip, but was apparently a little too zealous about it as it no longer snaps together. On the second one I just filed down one side, testing periodically to see when I thought it would be safe for my cats to wear. I then pulled out some pliers and pinched the sliding metal loops once the collar was sized to my largest cat's neck so it won't slide and be too big. On the bright side I now have one great collar for my large cat, one more collar on the way (yes, I ordered another one), and a new toy for my kitten to play with (she loves to play fetch, and this new "toy" is her favorite).
Okay, but could be betterSep 26, 2008 It worked out well on my cat at first. She didn't really notice it was there. After she did though she proceeded to pull it off. The collar snaps together fairly well, but it is easy to adjust the size to be big enough for her to slip her head through. She's not used to collars, so it's not like she'd like it anyway.

Hands Down the Best CollarSep 10, 2008 Hands down the best cat collar I've found to date!
My cat and I came to a resolve when she insisted on being an outdoor cat... a collar. I was using various basic collars until I noticed that she was losing fur around her neck. Other times I found crust (as if she scratched it or it rubbed her to rough).
Since I spoil her with everything I figured it was time to find the best collar too. Checked [...] and other places and everyone seemed to have collars with hip designs but nothing really to help the irritation if wearing a collar 24/7.
This is the collar I have been looking for. It is light and durable. It doesn't tightly wrap around her neck but loops around with the id tag sitting loosely on her chest. It has the breakaway feature so my little huntress doesn't get caught in anything while on the run. I bought 3 more. The Red with blue white speckle is adorable. :)
Her fur is growing back and she is at her happiest... and I have one less thing to worry about :)
P.S.: There have been complaints on other reviews about the collar not 'breaking away' - they fixed that some time ago so it snaps off easily.

My Cat Lost This Collar in One Month!Aug 30, 2008 I am still looking for a collar for my outdoor cat that won't come off and get lost. It's been only a month, and both cats showed up without their collars. These collars are pretty, but it won't stay on for long. Don't buy it and put on your city pet license tag, because you will most certainly lose it.

Great product but....Aug 16, 2008 I love that these collars are now breakaway, but the old collars were much better quality. The rope material for the old collars was of much higher quality but the old collars weren't breakaway. Because the rope from the new collars is not of the best quality, the clamps keep slipping and making the collar larger than it should be. Thanks for making them breakaway but please go back to the other rope! thx.
